Chuck was the first Westerner to ever receive the title of Grandmaster in any form of Karate. He's also one of the few white martial arts stars and one of the earliest. In a time where people only saw asians doing these techniques, quite frankly on the basis of him being a white man was more acceptable to many Westerners.
