How do I go about a ring valuation?

I have been given a ring that has been passed down the family. It is suposedly a diamond and opal ring... how do I go about getting it valued? Should I take it to H SAMUELS and leave it there? How much does it usually cost, etc? What would I ask for also? Thank you for any help you can give.
