Why is a book of mythical creatures taken seriously?

Some of these are supposed to be Satan, others are supposed to be sent from God. I don't believe the bible word for word, although I believe it is based off fact. Maybe the snake wasn't there, but Eve did eat the apple and so did Adam. Maybe Adam and Eve were there, but Eve wasn't created from Adam's rib.
